Leaders in the submersible craft industry were so worried about what they called the “experimental” approach of OceanGate, the company whose craft has gone missing, that they wrote a letter in 2018 warning of possible “catastrophic” problems with the submersible’s development and its planned mission to tour the Titanic wreckage. The letter, obtained by The New York Times, was sent to OceanGate’s chief executive, Stockton Rush, by the Manned Underwater Vehicles committee of the Marine Technology Society, a 60-year-old trade group that aims to promote ocean technology and educate the public about it.
Not sure if the letter is paywalled, but here's an excerpt:
Your marketing material advertises that the TITAN design will meet or exceed the DNV-GL safety standards, yet it does not appear that Oceangate has the intention of following DNV-GL class rules. Your representation is, at minimum, misleading to the public and breaches an industry- wide professional code of conduct we all endeavor to uphold. We do all agree that a performance-based testing program for design verification is a recognized and valid approach to new technologies. However, we recommend that at a minimum you institute a prototype testing program that is reviewed and witnessed by DNV-GL (or ABS). While this may demand additional time and expense, it is our unanimous view that this validation process by a third-party is a critical component in the safeguards that protect all submersible occupants.

$15,007/45K‼️‼️
Hello, my name is Nagham. I am a Palestinian girl living in Gaza, a third-year software engineering student at Al-Azhar University.
My family consists of 12 members. I have five brothers, one of whom is a small child, and I am the only daughter in my family. We Have also Two of my brother's wife’s and 2 childrens and our parents . We lived a happy and comfortable life before the war destroyed our lives, home, work, university, and dreams!! I never imagined that I would ask for help from anyone; we were always the ones helping others. But life has put us in this position, and we must move forward and save our lives.
Forced displacement:
First, the occupation forcibly displaced us from our home without allowing us to take any of our clothes, money, or certificates... amidst the bombs and fire. We have been displaced eight times. We used to live in the north and then, eight months ago, we forcibly moved to the south to protect ourselves. We were displaced to Khan Younis, then to Rafah, then to Nuseirat, then to Al-Bureij, and now we are in a tent in Deir al-Balah. Every place we moved to was destroyed; there is no safe place.
Our home has been destroyed:
My family has suffered greatly from the situation in Gaza, which we have always loved, but our home has been completely destroyed. The house and everything is now destroyed, and we have nothing left. These are the latest pictures we received of our home, and we have new news that it has been completely destroyed. My university was bombed, my siblings and I lost a whole year of education, and my father lost his job. We have nothing now. You are our only hope to rescue our family from this brutal war and genocide.
Help us find safety and start our lives anew after losing everything in Gaza. Every small donation makes a difference. Donate and share the link with your family and friends. Your encouragement gives us hope. Thank you all. 💐
